Supreme Court Returns to Full Strength with New Judges

• Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai swore in Justices Alok Aradhe and Vipul M. Pancholi as Supreme Court judges.

• The court returned to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges, continuing until Chief Justice Gavai’s retirement on November 23.

• Justice Pancholi will become Chief Justice of India from October 3, 2031, until his retirement on May 27, 2033.

• Justice B.V. Nagarathna dissented, citing Pancholi’s seniority and the credibility of the Collegium.

• The Collegium recommended Pancholi and Aradhe on August 25, and their appointment was notified within 48 hours.

• Justice Pancholi was appointed as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in July 2023.
