• Putin warmly greeted al-Sharaa at the Kremlin, but al-Sharaa is expected to push for Moscow to extradite Assad.

• The two are expected to discuss the status of Russia’s military bases in Syria, including the naval base in Tartus and the air base at Hmeimim.

• Russia was a key ally of Assad during the Syrian civil war, providing vital military support.

• Al-Sharaa acknowledged the two countries’ historic ties but wanted a recalibration to bring Damascus back from isolation.

• The Russian leader hailed “special relations” between the two countries, but did not mention Assad or the Russian bases, the main sticking points in the relationship.
