Tamil Nadu Government’s Proposal for Women in Hazardous Jobs

• The Tamil Nadu government proposes amendments to the Tamil Nadu Factories Rules, 1950, allowing women to work in hazardous or dangerous jobs.

• The new rules will only apply to pregnant women and young persons.

• The amendment also requires factories to obtain written consent from women for night shifts.

• The new jobs include electrolytic process, glass manufacture, lead treatment, gas and petroleum generation, raw hide and skin blasting, graphite powdering, dichromate and carcinogenic dye intermediates, fireworks and match factories, manganese, dangerous pesticides, use of benzene, and operations involving high noise and vibration levels.

• The government must also provide adequate amenities and facilities for women, including separate toilets, changing rooms, closed areas for medical checks, and drop-home facilities.

• The government must ensure that women in circumstances that might not enable their participation in these jobs are not forced into them or penalized for not opting for these tasks.
