Textile businesses appeal against the anti-dumping duty on essential ingredient

• The textile industry has urged the government not to impose anti-dumping duty (ADD) on Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG), a key raw material for polyester production.

• R. K. Vij from the Polyester Textile Apparel Industry Association highlighted that 70%-75% of locally produced Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and MEG is consumed by the industry.

• India’s annual MEG requirement is 28 lakh tonnes, with around 12 lakh tonnes imported primarily from Singapore, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, and cannot be sourced from China due to quality restrictions.

• The proposed ADD would increase MEG costs by 20%, negatively impacting the pricing of manmade fibres and textiles.

• Approximately 40% of MEG consumed in India is imported, and there are no upcoming projects to boost local MEG production.

• The government had previously removed ADD on PTA in the 2020 Union Budget to stabilize raw material prices for the manmade fibre (MMF) industry.

• The recent reduction in GST on MMF yarn and fabrics was intended to promote MMF textile production, and imposing ADD on MEG would hinder this growth.

• Industry leaders like Ashwin Chandran emphasized the need for raw materials at international prices for the textile sector’s sustainability.

• The industry anticipates discussions with relevant governmental ministries regarding these concerns.
