Assam Cabinet Rejects 28,000 Cases Against Koch-Rajbongshi Community
• The Assam Cabinet has decided to withdraw 28,000 cases against the Koch-Rajbongshi community in Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs).
• The decision removes the ‘D’ or doubtful voter tag from these people, who are disenfranchised by the government for alleged lack of credible citizenship documents.
• The community, once part of present-day Assam, is one of six groups demanding Scheduled Tribe status in Assam.
• The Koch-Rajbongshis have renewed their demand for ST status and submitted a 15-point memo to the BJP’s Assam unit president.
• The community, which has a significant population in Meghalaya and Bangladesh, is considered an indigenous community and an inseparable part of the Assamese culture
