The CBI wants the R.G. Kar murderer executed.

• The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an appeal to the Calcutta High Court for the enhancement of life imprisonment to death penalty for Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer.

• The CBI, through Deputy Solicitor-General Rajdeep Majumdar, opposed the West Bengal government’s petition for the enhancement of punishment.

• The State’s Advocate-General, Kishore Dutta, argued the life sentence was inadequate and sought capital punishment.

• The Deputy Solicitor-General argued the West Bengal government did not have the right to appeal the trial court order on the grounds of inadequacy.

• The Division Bench will hear the matter on January 27.
