The concept of sexual equality must be included in the syllabus
• The Supreme Court has urged the inclusion of sexual equality and moral and ethical training in school syllabuses.
• Justice B.V. Nagarathna, head of a Bench, emphasized the need for early moral education in schools.
• Nagarathna emphasized the need to start equality between daughters and sons at home, arguing that discrimination starts at home with parents.
• The court heard a writ petition filed by senior advocate Aabad Ponda, who argued that the surge in rape cases and crimes against women was due to a lack of basic education about equality.
• Ponda also recommended using advertisements and visual media to convey zero tolerance to rape.
• The court ordered the government to record any measures taken to include the concept of sexual equality in school syllabus.
• The petition also called for efforts to bridge the gap between the law and its understanding and dissemination to the public.
