The deadline for solar firms to adopt India-made solar cells is June 26.
• The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has set a deadline of June ’26 for solar firms to adopt India-made solar cells.
• The deadline is to discourage foreign imports of components used in solar panel manufacturing.
• The MNRE proposed to issue List-II of solar PV cells under ALMM, effective from 1st June 2026.
• The ‘List-II’ refers to a list of solar cell manufacturers, which Indian solar companies primarily rely on.
• Schemes like the ₹75,000 crore PM rooftop-solar programme and PM Kusum programmes must source panels from domestic companies approved by the MNRE.
• High prices of Indian solar cells could increase the cost of capital cost of solar power projects by ₹5-10 million per megawatt.
• India has installed 92 gigawatt of solar capacity so far, with an expected increase in module and cell manufacturing capacity by 2027.
