    The ECI’s Crisis

    • The ECI, despite being credited with conducting one of the world’s largest and most inclusive elections, is facing a loss of public confidence and voter trust.

    • The ECI’s recent press conference on August 17 was criticized for its vague rhetoric, placing the onus on political parties regarding the integrity of voter lists, and calling out the Leader of the Opposition without naming the Leader of the Opposition.

    Unconvincing Answers

    • The ECI failed to clarify doubts about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar exercise, reassure voters of the sanctity of voter rolls, and answer questions about voter anomalies raised by Opposition parties and independent journalists.

    • The ECI’s refusal to share video footage, which is essential to identify dual voting, and its refusal to share the same voter list data provided before an election are examples of its refusal to share information.

    Denial of Data

    • The ECI has been accused of stonewalling any meaningful scrutiny by hiding behind bureaucratic jargon.

    • The Delhi High Court issued a notice imposing a time limit of three months to decide the representation of political parties.

    • The Supreme Court rejected the arguments presented by the ECI to deny this data and directed that the names of all those who had been deleted had to be published, along with the reasons.

    Losing Voter Trust

    • The ECI has lost the faith of all major political parties except for the party that is in power.

    • The ECI is now losing the trust of the voters it claims to serve.

Transparency, Not Secrecy is important topic for Civil service exam (WBCS).
