• The petition questions the legality of exceeding the 50% reservation ceiling established by the Supreme Court.

• The Telangana State Election Commission has scheduled panchayat elections to begin on October 9, with polling on October 23 and 27.

• The petition, filed by agriculturist Vanga Gopal Reddy, alleges that the increased quota violates judicial mandates from the 1992 Mandal Commission case.

• This challenge coincides with similar actions in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to raise OBC reservations beyond the 50% cap.

• The Supreme Court will also hear petitions next week against Section 4 of the Madhya Pradesh Lok Seva Amendment Act, which raised the OBC quota from 14% to 27%.

• Madhya Pradesh justifies this increase by stating that OBCs represent over half its population but remain underrepresented in various sectors.
