The top court has advised the Centre to consider sharing Wangchuk’s incarceration grounds with his wife

• The Supreme Court has urged the Centre to consider sharing the grounds for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s preventive detention with his wife, Gitanjali Angmo.

• Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) after violent protests in Leh on September 24.

• Dr. Angmo filed a habeas corpus plea, requesting the court to mandate the authorities produce her husband, who has been detained since September 26 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

• She highlighted the absence of information regarding the reasons for his detention and his health status.

• The court has issued notice to the Centre and Ladakh administration, scheduling a hearing for October 14.

• Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria stressed the need for the authorities to decide on sharing the detention grounds with Dr. Angmo.

• The Centre’s Solicitor-General, Tushar Mehta, stated that the grounds had been shared with Wangchuk, but not required to be disclosed to his wife per the NSA.

• Dr. Angmo contends that the detention is malicious and aims to quell democratic dissent.
