There is no decision on updating NPR along with Census

National Register of Citizens (NRC) in India

• NPR is the first step towards a National Register of Citizens (NRC), established in 2010.

• Data was collected during the House Listing and Housing (HLO) schedule of the 2011 Census.

• The NPR database contains household-wise details of the country’s 119 crore usual residents.

• Unlike Census data, NPR data can be shared with Central and State governments.

• Enumerators for the 2027 Census will begin training in July, using mobile apps for data collection.

• A pre-test exercise will be held in August and September to assess the process’s efficacy.

• The 2021 Census was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, completing in 2027.

• The 2019 pre-test included questions on household amenities, voter ID, mobile phone number, and driving license number
