Thuingaleng Muivah’s Homecoming and the Naga Peace Process

• Thuingaleng Muivah, a Naga leader, has returned to his hometown in Manipur after six decades, sparking hopes for a speedy resolution to the Naga peace process.

• Muivah, based in the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN), is known as the hero of the Naga-inhabited world, divided between India and Myanmar.

• His armed organization, the NSCN, has led the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M), which has been focusing on the unified Naga homeland.

• The Manipur government has seen this goal as a threat to the State’s territorial integrity and banned Muivah’s entry until recently.

• His visit to Somdal, a village in Manipur, was facilitated by his ill-health and the political scenario since the ethnic conflict in Manipur in May 2023.

• Muivah was born on March 3, 1934, five years after the Naga Club submitted a memorandum to the Simon Commission stating that the Nagas should be left to determine for themselves as in ancient times.

• His homecoming has ignited hopes for an honourable conclusion to the Naga peace process, which began on August 1, 1997, when the NSCN (I-M) and the Centre agreed to the cessation of armed conflict.

• Muivah’s followers pray that the Naga homeland with a “separate Naga Flag and a Naga Constitution or Yehzabo” becomes a reality.
