Today, SC will hear CEC appointment law petitions.
• The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a batch of petitions challenging the legality of a new law giving the Centre a dominant role in the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs).
• The case will be taken immediately after hearing a few fresh cases listed for Wednesday.
• Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was appointed CEC on Monday, the first CEC to be appointed under the 2023 law.
• The case raises the legal question of whether Parliament has the authority to promulgate a Gazette notification or ordinance to nullify or amend a Constitution Bench judgment.
• The petitions primarily challenge the validity of Section 7(1) of the statute mandating the President would appoint the CEC and ECs on the recommendation of a selection committee of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and a Union Minister.
