    • The U.S. government has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to dismiss a petition filed by Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana to avoid his extradition to India.

    • Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is wanted in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case.

    • After losing the legal battle against his extraditions in lower courts and several federal courts, Rana filed a “petition for a writ of certiorari” before the U.S. Supreme Court.

    • Rana, currently in jail in Los Angeles, faces charges for his role in the Mumbai attacks and is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley.

    • U.S. Solicitor-General Elizabeth B. Prelogar argued that Rana is not entitled to relief from extradition to India in this case.

    • Rana argued that he was tried and acquitted in the federal court in the Northern District of Illinois on charges relating to the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.

    • Prelogar disagreed, stating that India’s forgery charges are based on conduct not charged in the U.S., and that the jury’s verdict does not necessarily mean he has been ‘convicted or acquitted’ on all specific conduct that India has charged.
