Umar Khalid, a former JNU student, is imprisoned without trial and bail since 2020 for alleged involvement in the Delhi riots

• Umar Khalid, a former student of modern history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, was arrested in September 2020 for conspiring in the riots in February 2020.

• The riots, which left 53 dead and hundreds displaced, were triggered by the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

• Khalid, who pleaded not guilty for the crime, claims he only participated in peaceful protests related to the CAA, many of which were far from the national capital.

• His friend Anirban Bhattacharya, a JNU student, explains that Khalid was concerned about religious discrimination and the ‘non-practising Muslim’ status he used to call himself.

• Khalid and his friend Anirban Bhattacharya were charged for sedition in 2016 for organizing a protest over the hanging of Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri man convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack.

• Khalid also participated in protests in solidarity with Najeeb Ahmed, another JNU student who went missing in 2016.

• Khalid was also booked for giving ‘provocative’ speeches during the Bhima Koregaon violence.

• His partner, Banojyotsna Lahiri, expresses disbelief over his long imprisonment without a trial in a democracy he used to celebrate.

• Bhattacharya, who met Khalid before the Delhi High Court, shares his experience of the five years of confinement, stating that the limited information flow behind the prison walls slows down his life.
