    Unemployment Rate in India: Labour Survey Report

    • The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for July 2023 to June 2024 shows no significant change in the unemployment rate.
    • There is a slight increase in the distribution of workers in agriculture, but the manufacturing sector shows no growth in job creation compared to previous years.
    • Women’s participation in the workforce has improved, despite criticism for the rising unemployment rate and decrease in women in jobs.
    • The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) increased from 50.7% in 2017-18 to 63.7% in 2023-24 in rural areas, and from 47.6% to 52% in urban areas.
    • The unemployment rate decreased from 5.3% in 2017-18 to 2.5% in 2023-24 in rural areas, and from 7.7% to 5.1% in urban areas.
    • The overall unemployment rate is 3.2%, similar to last year.
    • Labour economist Santosh Mehrotra criticizes the annual survey for revealing a grim employment scenario.
