Union Carbide’s Toxic Waste in Madhya Pradesh: 40 Years After Bhopal Gas Tragedy
• Hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste remain on Union Carbide India Ltd. premises in Madhya Pradesh, four decades after the Bhopal gas tragedy.
• Despite court orders and warnings, the waste has not been safely disposed of.
• The Union government has released ₹126 crore to the Madhya Pradesh government for disposal plans.
• A 2010 study revealed 11 lakh tonnes of contaminated soil, one tonne of mercury, and nearly 150 tonnes of underground dumps.
• The government has no plans to deal with the contamination.
• Groundwater in residential areas outside the factory is contaminated with heavy metals and other toxic substances.
• The National Green Tribunal has called for action within six months, but it has not been followed.
