US Ambassador-Designate Sergio Gor Highlights India’s Russian Oil Imports

• US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor has stated that ending India’s Russian oil imports is a top priority.

• Gor stated that despite recent U.S. outreach to restart trade ties, Russian imports will continue to be an issue.

• Gor stated that U.S. President Donald Trump has made it clear that India must end all imports of Russian oil, which make up about 35% to 40% of India’s intake.

• U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that trade negotiations would be resolved “once” India stops buying the oil, suggesting this is a pre-condition for any deal.

• Gor also stated that India and the U.S. are “not that far apart” from a deal on the 50% tariffs imposed on India.

• Gor and Lutnick’s comments come days after Trump posted that he expected “no difficulty” in coming to an agreement on trade.

• The Ministry of External Affairs declined to comment on the statements made by Gor and Lutnick.

• Gor noted that despite the Indo-U.S. tensions, Trump and Modi have a “unique” friendship, complimenting Modi when the President has been critical of India.
