US Asks G7 to Impose Tariffs on Russian Oil Purchasers

• The US has requested G7 members to impose tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil.

• The US believes that only ‘unified efforts’ can apply sufficient pressure to end the “senseless killing.”

• Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reiterated President Donald Trump’s call to the bloc’s partners about imposing tariffs on countries purchasing oil from Russia.

• Trump is ready to sanction Moscow on the condition that all NATO allies agree to completely halt purchases of Russian oil and implement their own sanctions.

• He also suggests that members of the transatlantic alliance consider imposing tariffs of 50% to 100% on China to help end Russia’s war in Ukraine.

• The US has imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods, including a 25% additional duty for India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.
