US Invites Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Indian Trade Team to Washington for India-U.S. FTA Resumption

• The U.S. administration has invited Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and the Indian trade team to Washington to resume talks for the India-U.S. FTA.

• The announcement follows a halt in tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.• U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor also expect smooth ties, a trade deal to be announced soon, and a Quad Summit later this year.

• Despite U.S. punitive actions against India on trade, visas, deportations, and comments on Operation Sindoor, the Trump administration has confirmed India’s active engagement with the U.S.

• Trump administration’s comments on India’s import of Russian oil could disrupt the future of the FTA.

• The tariffs could result in a loss of half a per cent from India’s GDP and job losses.

• The Modi government could consider the U.S. demands on reducing Russian oil if not served as an ultimatum.
