Uttar Pradesh Government Prohibits Caste-Based Political Rallyes

• The Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has issued a notification banning caste-based political rallies and its mention in police cases.

• The move follows a directive from the Allahabad High Court on September 16 to curb caste glorification.

• The only exemption is for crimes committed under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

• Opposition parties accuse the government of hypocrisy, claiming that the ruling BJP has held caste rallies and conferences in the past.

• The notification also orders strict monitoring of social media messages glorifying or condemning any caste.

• Vehicles displaying caste names or slogans/stickers will be challaned under the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

• Signboards glorifying a particular caste in public places or declaring geographical areas as caste-based areas or estates will be removed.

• The police will follow up with the National Crime Records Bureau to delete the field for entering the caste of the accused from the formats used on the CCTNS portal.
