• Experts have pointed out that widening of valley sides has created new landslide zones.

• The loss of natural stabilisers increases surface runoff during heavy rainfall or snowmelt, increasing the region’s susceptibility to landslides.

• The Centre and Uttarakhand government have shown inadequate sensitivity to the idiosyncrasies of the mountains and ignored the red flags raised by experts.

• The review of the MORTH project could be the start of a broader course correction.
