• Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar is gaining popularity as a platform for Opposition unity.

• The campaign covers 1,300 kilometers across 20 districts and concludes in Patna on September 1.

• Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has accused the BJP of turning the Election Commission of India (ECI) into a puppet.

• The alleged “vote chori” (vote theft) has become the Opposition’s central rallying cry.

• The Opposition has complained about less transparency and partisan aspects of the electoral process.

• The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and the demonstrable loopholes in electoral rolls have given the Opposition allegation a strong handle.

• The ECI has added credence to the allegations, claiming that over 98% of voters in the existing list have submitted an enrolment form.

• The allegations are a sign of institutional distrust and rot, with the Opposition space severely restricted by the arbitrary use of central law enforcement agencies.
