Wangchuk’s wife petitions Supreme Court for his quick release

• Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court against his preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA) after protests in Leh on September 24.

• Angmo requests the Supreme Court to order authorities to reveal Wangchuk’s whereabouts and ensure his immediate release, highlighting a lack of information since his reported detention in Jodhpur on September 26.

• The NSA allows preventive detention if an individual’s activities threaten public order or national security, requiring relevant material to substantiate such actions.

• The Supreme Court has established guidelines for exercise of authority under the NSA, ensuring that detention orders are based on objective facts and not arbitrary considerations.

• The court considers preventive detention a significant infringement on personal liberty.

• The Ladakh administration accused Wangchuk of inciting violence through speeches and misleading videos, stating it was unwise to keep him in the Leh district.
