West Bengal Teachers Dejected Over Supreme Court’s Rejection of Review Petition

• West Bengal teachers expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s rejection of review petitions against its April 3 order invalidating the appointments of 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff in State-run and aided schools.

• The recruitment in 2016 by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) was linked to a cash-for-jobs “scam”.

• The court dismissed the review petitions filed by the State government, the WBSSC, and others.

• Chinmoy Mondal, leader of the Jogyo Shikkhok Shikkhika Adhikar Mancha (JSSAM), criticized the court’s decision, stating that only providing age relaxation and forcing around 15,000 ‘untainted’ candidates to reappear for the recruitment process is unfair.

• Mehboob Mondal, another leader of JSSAM, stated that around 13,000 ‘untainted’ teachers filled out the new recruitment form, but nearly 3,000 couldn’t due to differences between the new recruitment rules and the ones they followed in the 2016 recruitment drive.
