X Corp. challenges government content blocking orders.
• X Corp, formerly Twitter Inc, has filed a petition with the Karnataka High Court challenging the Union and State governments’ blocking orders on its platform.
• The company opposes the Centre’s new Sahyog portal, a “censorship portal”, which allows all government agencies to issue blocking orders.
• The petition seeks to direct the government that blocking orders can only be issued under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, not Section 79(3)(b) of the Act.
• The Union government argues that orders under Section 79 are not “direct blocking orders”, but rather not “direct blocking orders”.
• The company also questions a communication against the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) that allowed them to issue blocking orders under Section 79(3)(b) of the Act.
• The Sahyog portal, developed by the Union Home Ministry, is viewed as a “censorship portal” to facilitate such orders.
