Youth Employment in Bihar: A Political Dilemma

• Young voters in Bihar, comprising 22% of the state’s electorate, prioritize government jobs.

• The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Opposition grand alliance have been highlighting their promises to provide jobs to unemployed youth.

• The Nitish Kumar government has distributed lakhs of job appointment letters, with the Chief Minister promising “one crore more jobs in the future.”

• Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav claims that lakhs of jobs were provided during the 17 months of the previous grand alliance government.

• The unemployment rate in Bihar is 5.9%, higher than the national average of 4.1%, and for the 15-29 age group, it stands at 20.1%.

• The lack of employment opportunities has pushed lakhs of migrants into leaving their native State for livelihood.

• Economicist Sudhanshu Kumar agrees that the employment scenario of the youth in the State has been very disturbing.
