    Anthropology as an optional subject is popular among WBCS aspirants because it is considered scoring and also, its syllabus is relatively less now after a few portions were omitted. It is also helpful for science students as it is a perfect combination of science and social science. It has certain elements of biology and anatomy. It also includes social topics in it.     Anthropology Optional Strategy

    • Try selective reading from different books, some books are good for a particular topic and some for another and it also looks better when the examiner is looking at your answer sheet.
    • Making hand written notes, when you have to revise a lot in a very limited time you should make your own notes. Short notes for every word in the syllabus.
    • Opt for the subject when you have the sufficient interest WBCS requires it, Anthropology requires in depth knowledge of the topic or else it will be very difficult. Make sure whatever topic you cover you have in-depth knowledge about it.
    • Solve all the last year paper in as proper way as you can, initially it will take time but will prepare you for writing the exam.
    • Try to look at the overall viewpoint of the topic think of society as a whole large institution, give definitions by anthropologists and cover different examples for the same.
    • Case studies should be properly quoted. Try your best to quote the person/institution that has done the case study. It will make your answer more relevant and shows that you are aware about what is happening.
    • Try to start as early as possible after WBCS prelims examination, because delaying will only make it difficult.
    • Practice diagram if you do not know learn to make diagrams because it will fetch you extra marks.
    • You will see a lot of case studies while studying anthropology, note them down and use it to explain the concept.

    Tips to prepare for WBCS mains exam –

    Making a study plan

    The first step in any endeavour is to outline a plan. Before you embark on your mains preparation, make a realistic study plan. In this plan, you must include dates for all the GS papers, language papers and the optional subject. You should also incorporate a dedicated time every day for newspaper reading.

    Basic book reading

    You would already have read many of the basic books before the prelims exam. Even so, you can read basic textbooks of all the subjects that you have to study. Start with subjects that interest you so that you can cover a lot of ground in the initial phase itself. After the basic books are done with, you should move on to detailed books only where it is recommended.

    Practicing questions

    Simultaneous to your book reading, you should start practicing questions from previous years’ WBCS papers. This will help you analyse your own knowledge and also familiarise you with the type of questions asked. Answer writing is very important in the mains exam and at the end of the day, you will be marked on what you write on paper and not on your knowledge. So, practice answer writing along with your mains preparation. Don’t wait till you finish the full syllabus to start writing practice.

    Revision is a must if you are serious about clearing the WBCS mains exam, you should revise periodically and ensure maximum understanding and retention. Revision ensures that you remember whatever you read in the vast WBCS syllabus.
